If you are searching for Panchakarma treatment in Pune, it helps to understand the treatment before you choose a centre. Classical Panchakarma is a supervised medical course in Ayurveda, with preparation before it and a careful return to normal food after it. This guide explains what it involves, who it is and is not for, and how to choose a centre.
What Panchakarma means
Panchakarma means "five actions". These are the classical cleansing procedures of Ayurveda, used to remove what the body has accumulated and bring the doshas back into balance. It is not one treatment. A doctor decides which procedures, if any, suit you, in what order and for how long.
The main procedures
- Vaman (therapeutic emesis), traditionally used for Kapha-related concerns
- Virechan (therapeutic purgation), traditionally used for Pitta-related concerns
- Basti (medicated enema), in two forms: Anuvasana with oil and Niruha with decoction
- Nasya (medicine given through the nose), for the head, sinuses and neck
- Raktamokshan (bloodletting), used only in selected cases
Very few people need all five. Many courses use one or two main procedures with supporting therapies.
Preparation and recovery matter as much as the procedure
Before the main procedure, the body is prepared with Snehan (oleation, taking or applying medicated oils and ghee) and Swedan (fomentation or steam). After it, you follow a graded diet that slowly returns to normal food. This is why Panchakarma is best done while staying at the centre: the diet, rest and timing are controlled every day, and a doctor can see you if anything needs to change.
Who should not start Panchakarma without a doctor's advice
Panchakarma is not suitable for everyone. Always tell the doctor if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have heart disease, very high or very low blood pressure, or diabetes on medicine
- are very weak, recovering from a recent illness or surgery, or are elderly and frail
- take blood thinners or other long-term medicine
- are menstruating at the time of admission, since some procedures are not given during menstruation
Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own. At Shree Narayandham, admission is confirmed only after a physical examination by our doctors, and a procedure may be declined if it is not safe for you.
What a Panchakarma stay looks like at Shree Narayandham
Shree Narayandham is a residential naturopathy and Ayurveda centre at Shree Kshetra Narayanpur in Purandar taluka, about 35 km from Pune city and 9 km from Saswad. A Panchakarma course here usually follows this pattern:
- Consultation. An Ayurvedic doctor reviews your history, reports and medicines and decides whether Panchakarma is right for you.
- Preparation. Snehan and Swedan, along with a light diet, where the doctor advises it.
- The main procedure, carried out under supervision.
- Recovery. A graded diet, rest and a routine to follow at home.
Alongside this you join the daily routine of yoga and pranayam, walks and meditation, which you can read about on our Dincharya page. Supporting therapies such as Abhyanga, Shirodhara and the Basti oil therapies are added when the doctor recommends them. See the full list on our Panchakarma page.
How much does Panchakarma cost near Pune?
At Shree Narayandham there is no separate Panchakarma package price. You pay one daily tariff per person that covers your room, all meals, the treatments your doctor prescribes and doctor consultations. For 2026-27 it starts at ₹4,000 per person per day in a Family Deluxe room shared by two guests, and the minimum stay is three days.
A few items are charged separately depending on the room, such as the Virechan ghee and medical kit in the Family Deluxe and Premium Suite. ECG, laboratory tests and Uttar Basti are charged extra in every room. The total depends on your room and on how many days the doctor recommends. Our rooms and tariff page has every figure, and the insurance page explains how to check whether your health policy covers Ayurveda treatment.
How to choose a Panchakarma centre in Pune
- Doctors, not only therapists. Ask who assesses you and who supervises the procedure.
- A consultation before any procedure. A centre that books Vaman or Virechan without examining you is a warning sign.
- Residential care. Preparation and recovery diets are hard to follow while commuting from home.
- Clear pricing. Ask what the daily rate includes and what is extra.
- Honest answers. No one can promise a cure. Be cautious of anyone who does.
