Knee, back and neck pain are among the most common reasons people come to Shree Narayandham. If you are looking for Ayurvedic treatment for knee pain in Pune, or for back or neck pain, this article explains how Ayurveda, naturopathy and physiotherapy can be combined in one plan, what the therapies involve, and when you should see a doctor before trying any of them.

See a doctor first if you have warning signs

Some pain needs urgent medical attention. See a doctor or go to a hospital straight away if you have:

  • pain after a fall or injury, or a joint that looks out of shape
  • numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs or arms
  • loss of bladder or bowel control
  • fever, or a hot, red, swollen joint
  • weight loss you cannot explain, or pain that wakes you at night

Our approach is for long-standing pain that has already been assessed, and it works alongside your orthopaedic care.

How Ayurveda looks at joint and back pain

Ayurveda links many joint and spine problems to an imbalance of Vata dosha, made worse by age, cold, irregular routine, poor digestion and stress. Treatment therefore looks beyond the painful joint to diet, digestion, sleep and daily habits, alongside local therapies for the area itself.

Therapies your doctor may recommend

After a consultation, your plan may include some of the following.

Basti oil therapies

Warm medicated oil is held over the painful area inside a ring made of dough:

  • Janu Basti for the knees
  • Kati Basti for the lower back
  • Greeva Basti for the neck

Potli and massage

  • Patra potli and Valuka potli: warm bundles of herbs or sand applied to the body
  • Abhyanga: full-body oil massage
  • Lep chikitsa: herbal paste applied to the affected area

Naturopathy

Hydrotherapy, knee packs and other packs, mud therapy and massage, chosen to suit your condition.

Physiotherapy

Sessions run every afternoon and may include exercise therapy, lumbar and cervical traction, interferential therapy (IFT), TENS, ultrasound, wax therapy and infrared. They are planned with your doctor so they fit with your other therapies. See our physiotherapy page.

Yoga and movement

Gentle yoga adapted to your joints, daily walks and posture work, taught so you can continue them at home.

Why diet and weight matter

Extra body weight adds load to the knees and lower back. Your doctor will prescribe a diet during your stay and guide you on what to eat at home. Read more on our diet therapy page.

Keep your current medicines

Do not stop pain medicine or any other prescribed medicine without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it. Tell our doctors about everything you take.

What to expect

There is no single course that suits everyone, and no one can promise a cure. What a residential stay offers is time: therapies every day, physiotherapy, rest and a routine you learn to keep after you go home. Your doctor reviews your progress during the stay. Read more about the conditions we support on our joints, muscles and bones page.
