Many families do not realise that their health policy may cover Ayurveda. If you are planning an Ayurveda treatment insurance claim, a few checks before admission can save a lot of trouble later. This guide explains what to look for in your policy, what to ask your insurer, and which documents to keep.

AYUSH cover in Indian health insurance

Many health insurance policies in India now include cover for AYUSH treatment: Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. The details differ a lot between policies. Some cover the full sum insured, some set a lower limit, and most cover only inpatient treatment that meets certain conditions. Your policy wording, not general rules, decides what you can claim.

Five things to check in your policy

  1. Is AYUSH treatment covered? Look for a section or clause on AYUSH or alternative treatment.
  2. Is there a limit? Some policies cap AYUSH claims at a fixed amount or a share of the sum insured.
  3. Inpatient conditions. Many policies require a minimum period of admission and treatment at a qualifying hospital or centre. Check the exact wording.
  4. Waiting periods. New policies and pre-existing conditions often have waiting periods before a claim is accepted.
  5. Room rent and other sub-limits. These can reduce the amount you receive even when the treatment is covered.

Questions to ask your insurer or TPA

Call the number on your health card and ask:

  • Does my policy cover inpatient Ayurveda or naturopathy treatment?
  • Is there a limit for AYUSH claims?
  • What does the centre need to provide for a claim?
  • Is this a reimbursement claim, and how many days do I have to submit it after discharge?

Write down the answers and the name of the person you spoke to.

Documents to keep for a reimbursement claim

  • The claim form from your insurer
  • The discharge summary and the treating doctor's certificate
  • Itemised bills and payment receipts
  • Your medical reports and prescriptions
  • Your policy copy, health card and photo ID

Common reasons claims are rejected

  • The policy does not include AYUSH cover, or the limit has been used.
  • The waiting period for the condition had not ended.
  • The stay did not meet the policy's inpatient conditions.
  • Documents were missing or submitted late.

Most of these can be avoided by checking before you are admitted.
