Naturopathy Diet: What You Eat During a Nature Cure Stay

What a naturopathy diet plan looks like during a residential stay: meal times, raw and cooked food, juices, herbal drinks, fasting days and eating at home.

In naturopathy, food is treatment. A naturopathy diet plan is prescribed by the doctor for your health and your goals, and changes as your stay progresses. If you are planning a stay, here is what to expect on your plate.

The principles

  • Natural, fresh food: fruit, vegetables, whole grains, sprouts, pulses, nuts and seeds.
  • Less processed food: little or no refined sugar, white flour, fried food or packaged snacks.
  • Simple cooking: light oil, mild spices, steaming and boiling over frying.
  • Right timing: a light breakfast, the main meal at midday and an early, light dinner.
  • Enough water, taken between meals rather than with them.

Types of diet a doctor may prescribe

  • Eliminative diet: fruit, juices, soups, raw vegetables and herbal drinks. Light and cleansing.
  • Soothing diet: fruit, salads, boiled or steamed vegetables, sprouts and buttermilk.
  • Constructive diet: a fuller diet with whole grains, pulses, curd and nuts, to build strength.
  • Fasting or juice days: only when the doctor advises them. See our fasting guide.

Most guests move from one type to another during their stay.

A day of meals at Shree Narayandham

  • Breakfast, 8:10 to 9 am: often fruit, sprouts or a light cooked dish.
  • Lunch, 11 am to 1 pm: the main meal, for example chapati, rice, dal, vegetables and salad, as prescribed.
  • Juice and herbal drink, 4 to 4:30 pm.
  • Dinner, 7:30 to 9 pm: light and early.

Meals are prepared fresh in our kitchen. Because each diet has a purpose, outside food and personal food choices are not permitted during treatment. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are not served. Supplements recommended by your doctor are available at the wellness shop on campus.

Is it filling?

Most guests are surprised by how satisfied they feel. In the first days, if you are used to tea, coffee or sugar, you may get a headache or feel tired; this usually settles within a few days. Tell the doctor how you feel each day.

Who needs a modified plan

Tell the doctor if you have diabetes, kidney disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are underweight, or have food allergies. Your plan will be adjusted, and some diets, such as fasting, may not be suitable at all.

Eating at home afterwards

Before you leave, the doctor will guide you on what to eat at home. Small, lasting changes, such as an earlier dinner, more vegetables and fruit, and less sugar and tea, often matter more than a strict plan you cannot keep.
