Shirodhara is one of the best-known Ayurvedic therapies. A steady, thin stream of warm medicated oil, or sometimes buttermilk or a herbal decoction, is poured on the forehead for a set time. Most people find it profoundly calming. Here is what it is used for, how it is done and when to avoid it.
What "Shirodhara" means
Shiro means head and dhara means a flow. The stream falls on the forehead, the area between the eyebrows, and the therapist moves it slowly from side to side.
What it is traditionally used for
In Ayurveda, Shirodhara is used where Vata and Pitta are disturbed in the head and mind. People commonly come to it for:
- Stress, worry and a mind that will not switch off
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Tension headaches
- Mental tiredness
- Some scalp and hair concerns
It supports a wider plan of routine, diet, yoga and, where needed, care from your own doctor. It does not replace treatment for anxiety, depression or migraine.
How it is done
- The doctor checks you and chooses the oil or liquid, its temperature and the length of the session.
- You lie on your back on a wooden treatment table, with your eyes covered.
- A vessel above your head lets the oil fall in a thin, steady stream onto your forehead.
- The session usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes.
- You rest afterwards, then wash your hair with warm water. Avoid cold air and wind for the rest of the day.
It is often preceded by a gentle head and body massage.
How many sessions?
Ayurvedic doctors usually advise a course of several consecutive days, often seven, rather than one session. The number depends on why you are having it.
Who should avoid Shirodhara
- Fever, cold or blocked sinuses on the day
- Recent head or neck injury
- Very low blood pressure, or dizziness
- Pregnancy, unless the doctor approves it
- Open wounds or skin infection on the scalp
Some therapies are not given during menstruation; ask the doctor.

Can I have Shirodhara if I take medicine for anxiety or sleep?

Is Shirodhara done with any oil?
No. The oil, or a liquid such as buttermilk, is chosen for you by the doctor.
